Bowled over by a googly from Google

5 September 2013

Today's Google Doodle celebrates the 187th birthday of John Wisden, and 150 years since his Almanac was published, with a cricketing illustration.

It’s being displayed on Google browsers in the UK, India, Australia and New Zealand but not the baseball-playing US. Perhaps Damian Lewis, star of US mega-hit Homeland, could be our new cricket ambassador there? This Saturday Lewis dons white flannels to play in the Actors’ cricket XI — Harold Pinter’s old team — against the Authors’ XI at Wormsley Cricket Ground in Buckinghamshire.

Wormsley was bought by Anglophile billionaire John Paul Getty in 1986 and is owned by the family. Sebastian Faulks, William Fiennes and Charlie Campbell will turn out for the scribes as part of the first Words and Wickets cricket and literature festival.
