Campbell does God and bothers about honesty

Why do God? Because Alastair Campbell doesn’t?

Last night Tony Blair’s former spin doctor was talking to celebrity cook Delia Smith about faith at Bloomsbury’s BMA HQ and explained how his famous declaration has had unforeseen repercussions. “It’s the most ridiculous story,” said Campbell, “and including today there has not been a day that I haven’t had an email from someone saying ‘I’m writing a thesis about this and you said ‘We don’t do God’...”

Campbell also spoke about the Leveson inquiry recommendations which he welcomed last week as “sensible, clever and proportionate”.

“I’ve always said there will not be change in the British press until there is an honest debate within the British press. We have seen in the last few years how utterly dishonest they are continuing to be. There has been no coverage at all about the way Europe is presented in our press, or faith, or business. I don’t know what you do about it. I’m afraid we’re in danger of blowing our one chance in our lifetime to do anything about it.”

Campbell knows all about press standards. At the Mirror he propagated the story that the then PM John Major tucked his shirt inside his underpants.
