Sharpen your quills. Independent publisher Notting Hill Editions has launched a £15,000 literary award for the best new essay in the English language.

The William Hazlitt Essay Prize, named in honour of the 19th-century essayist and critic, will be bestowed upon an essay of 2,000-8,000 words on any subject.

“The British underplay the importance of the essay yet we’re naturally very good at them,” says Harry Mount, chair of the judges.

“The mixture of wit, brevity and original thought rather suits us.”

The author and journalist is fast becoming the most discerning man on the literary scene. His next book? The Wit and Wisdom of Boris Johnson.
