Beatrix Miller, the late and legendary Vogue editor who steered the magazine through the wild new fashions of the Sixties and Seventies, was famed for her fashion foresight and her ability to scout fresh talent. But who knew she was equally skilled at spotting new life?

International fashion stars including Twiggy, photographer Mario Testino, Manolo Blahnik, current Vogue editors Anna Wintour and Alexandra Shulman and creative director Grace Coddington, crowded into Mayfair’s St George’s Church yesterday for Miller’s memorial service. Among the moving tributes was an unexpected tale of Miller’s almost psychic abilities.

Sandra Boler, a former Vogue underwear editor, recalled once asking the immaculately dressed editor if she could slip out of the office as she was feeling a little peculiar. Months later, when Boler announced she was expecting, Beatrix opened a drawer and pulled out a piece of paper. It read: “Sandra Boler is pregnant but doesn’t know it yet.”
