Forensic flak for Kirsty Wark

14 October 2013

Is Newsnight presenter Kirsty Wark not part of the Guardian magic circle that holds sway over the programme? We only ask because she got some mild criticism from ex-Guardian editor Peter Preston in the Observer yesterday.

“When Wark tried a rather spluttery interrogation of Glenn Greenwald,” wrote Preston, “was that useful or irritating?” He then quotes former BBC head of news Richard Sambrook’s blog which says that British broadcasting has been enthralled by adversarial interviews which seldom reveal as much as “a more forensic approach”. “What now, with the great inquisitors — Paxo, Humphrys — nearing retirement? Discuss: calmly and forensically,” says Preston.

To be forensic, the new editor of Newsnight is Ian Katz, ex-deputy editor of Guardian, and its political editor is ex-Guardian Allegra Stratton. A shot across Wark’s bows?
