Heston Blumenthal’s spuds in space

Heston Blumenthal has made a living from culinary experimentation but now the chef has gone even further. Blumenthal was at the Science Museum last night as part of the Strictly SW7 dinner series and told the Londoner of his galactic ambitions: for a potato.

He has sent a spud into space attached to a weather balloon for a new Channel 4 show. “It cost a fortune,” said Heston, unapologetic at breaking new frontiers in science and budgets. The idea of the project is to document texture-change at high altitude. The scientific purpose of attaching a pair of Heston’s trademark spectacles, however, is unknown.
