Jon Cruddas history isn’t on Ed Miliband’s side

2 July 2014

Dagenham MP Jon Cruddas, the man leading Labour’s policy review who at the weekend blamed Ed Miliband’s inner circle for stopping Labour adopting bold, radical policies, dived into more hot water at the RSA last night.

He described George Lansbury — grandpa of actress Angela — as the best leader Labour ever had. As Lansbury resigned when defeated at the 1935 party conference before he could lead his troops into a general election, we cannot but wonder whether Ed has chosen the right man to lead Labour’s policy review. Ed, by the way, did not receive as much as a mention.

Cruddas also called the last Labour government “too top-down and authoritarian” and quoted advice to JFK “to be more Irish than Harvard”. As Miliband went to Harvard and isn’t Irish, this also may not count as terribly helpful.
