Fresh from his triumph at Dubai’s Emirates Airline Literary Festival, Lord Archer popped up in Sharjah to mark the opening of the Emirate’s book fair. His role was to open the London Book Fair stand. “There’s a bunch of Arabs,” he declaimed. “They’ve got a big stand. There’s a bunch of Indians. They’ve got a big stand. I’m supposed to open this? It’s a box,” he said, turning to LBF director Jack Thomas. But the redoubtable bestselling novelist, tieless and ready for signing action, ploughed on undeterred.

Having officially declared the “box” open, Archer signed copies of his books and then gave a talk to an audience of around 400 people. His £25,000 fee was paid to charity.
