Mair vs Mayor on Marr: BBC defends its man

Biographer Sonia Purnell tells the Londoner that Boris Johnson’s interview with Eddie Mair on the Andrew Marr Show, in which the BBC presenter said the Mayor was “a nasty piece of work”, won’t finish him off. “Boris is the Houdini of British politics,” Purnell told the Londoner. But what about Mair?

The BBC defends its man. “We believe this was a fair interview which took in issues facing London and the wider political landscape,” says a BBC spokesman.

The interview was pegged to tonight’s Michael Cockerell documentary on Boris. “As the documentary is biographical, exploring controversial episodes in the Mayor’s life was considered appropriate. Eddie’s line of questioning attempted to elicit responses to direct questions that were not being answered.”
