Malcolm Tierney’s life of champagne and ladies

Farewell to Malcolm Tierney, actor and frequenter of Soho’s French House pub. They raised a glass to him on Wednesday, after news that he died the previous night following a short illness. Tierney, who appeared in the first Star Wars movie, went on to play Scouse gangster Tommy McArdle in Brookside, antiques dealer Charlie Gimbert opposite Ian McShane in Lovejoy, and in 2012 Sorin in Chekhov’s The Seagull at the Southwark Playhouse.

Despite being an avowed socialist, Tierney never said no to a glass of champagne, recalls one of his Soho drinking companions. Just last year he threw a “ladies only” party at his home in Pimlico for 100 of his closest female friends. His good friend the actor Tim Woodward described Tierney as “a beautiful dreamer who understood the important things in life”.
