Thomasina Miers may have got her big break winning MasterChef in 2005 before building her Wahaca chain empire, but she has a word of warning for British Bake Off victor John Whaite.

“Reality TV doesn’t hand anything to you on a plate,” she said, with no pun intended, at the launch of the new Spice Trip cookbook by Stevie Parle and Emma Grazette at the Dock Kitchen in Ladbroke Grove. “You’ve just got to carry on doing what you want to do. It can’t be anything fake; there’s no magic wand in TV. He just needs to get on with it.”

Miers was joined by fellow chef Valentine Warner who, following the completion of his forthcoming series on Scandinavian foods, hopes to gain some company further afield. “Thomasina and I want to do a culinary road trip of South America,” he explained. “It will involve lots of drinking and gutsy food. All we need now is a commission — and our partners would probably have to come too.”
