Nick Clegg gave a performance on LBC this morning worthy of the one by George Entwistle on Today which caused his swift departure as director-general of the BBC. So are the vultures starting to circle over the Lib-Dem leader?

As the Londoner reported last June, plotting has been going on for some time as senior Lib-Dems have discussed grooming Business Secretary Vince Cable to be the next leader of their party. The prime mover is Lord Oakeshott, who resigned as the Lib-Dem Treasury spokesman in 2011 after criticising the Government’s economic policy and who had told friends that he expected Cable to be the leader “within a year”.

But perhaps it’s Lord Oakeshott himself who we need to watch. The Lib-Dem peer was also the person who introduced his cousin, Sunday Times journalist Isabel Oakeshott, to Chris Huhne’s ex-wife Vicky Pryce, who is currently in court. Huhne was also a Lib-Dem leadership contender before being cut down in his prime over his speeding points.
