Not many people would dare stand up star actors such as Jude Law and Natalie Portman. But this Monday the pair — who are set to appear in the new western Jane Got a Gun — were abandoned like brides at the altar when their director Lynne Ramsay failed to turn up for the first day of shooting in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Ramsay is an acclaimed Scottish director whose last film, We Need to Talk About Kevin, won the 2012 Evening Standard’s Best Film Award. So far there is no word about why she has gone AWOL on a film she’d spent months preparing for but the producer, Scott Steindorff, is seething.

“I have millions of dollars invested, we’re ready to shoot, we have a great script, crew and cast,” Steindorff told Deadline.com.

“I’m shocked that someone would do this to 150 crew members, who devoted so much time, energy, commitment and loyalty to the project. I feel more for the crew and their families but we are keeping the show going on, directors are flying in, and a replacement is imminent.”

It’s not just the director who’s missing. A week before production was due to start, actor Michael Fassbender pulled out, citing scheduling clashes.

While everyone waits to see whether Jane will ever get her gun, the real question is when Ramsay will reveal why she didn’t appear. The Londoner called the office of Ramsay’s lawyer in New York but no one was available for comment.
