Sir Michael Gambon is having a playful tiff with Dame Eileen Atkins over who has done more homework for their Samuel Beckett play.

Beckett’s estate gave director Sir Trevor Nunn permission to stage All That Fall at the Jermyn St Theatre on condition that the staging highlighted its radio roots.

Gambon claims Atkins, who plays his wife, has learned her lines instead of reading from the script as if they were on radio.

“We were told not to learn it but to do it off the script. I’ve stuck to that like a lazy bugger,” he said.

Atkins said she simply found it hard to perform from a script.
