The Pentagon courted attention by bragging that a robot it had developed, nicknamed the Cheetah, could outrun Usain Bolt — but it hadn’t bargained on the sprinter having already practised with the real thing.

Bolt attended a fundraiser organised by the Zeitz Foundation and ZSL for cheetah and wild dog conservation at London Zoo last night, having seen their work on a visit to Kenya in 2009. “I adopted a cheetah, and we called him Lightning Bolt,” he said, “but he turned out to be a she.”

Founder Jochen Zeitz introduced Bolt to the cause by taking him on safari and encouraging him to run with the animals and the Olympian was happy to become an ambassador. “To give back to the world is a huge honour for me.”

Also at the party were Serpentine Gallery co-director Julia Peyton-Jones and actress Tamsin Egerton.
