We Can Be Heroes again: old clubbers get back in the groove

A time warp in Wardour Street last night as the St Moritz Club was mobbed by the 1981 cool crowd. Dressed up to the nines, they were out for the launch of We Can Be Heroes, a photo-essay book by Graham Smith and Chris Sullivan about London’s punk and New Romantic clubland in the late Seventies and early Eighties.

Among the guests was Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp. “I’ve bought a copy for each of my four sons,” he told the Londoner. “It explains more about what was happening then than my autobiography.” Kemp, however, did acknowledge that time can warp the memory of those heady days. “There was no internet, no Twitter, nothing to record things on, so the myth we made could be really extraordinary.”
