You'll get the best cornflakes and the nicest of nurses: beat that royal ode, Poet Laureate

30 July 2013

Whose newly penned royal lullaby will manage to match the winner of the Londoner’s previous 1982 poetry competition, held in honour of the birth of Prince William?

After wading through the archives we have unearthed the original winning entry, by one Leon Taylor of Hampstead:

“Hush-a-bye baby the outlook is fine
Your father’s a prince and your mother’s divine
All beautiful babies get plenty of kisses
Yours will be given by queens and princesses.
You’ll get the best cornflakes
And the nicest of nurses
While postmen each day
Bring you thousands of verses.

But, poor little baby, your mother and father
At bedtime will read all the lot to each other
They’ll make you learn ‘pussycat where have you been?’
And all of the verses of God save the Queen
While ladies-in-waiting with nothing to do
Read thousands of odes that were written for you.”

There is still no word on whether Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy will be writing an ode but keep your entries coming in.
