Boris speaks up for London at crunch time for athletics vote

Boris Johnson: Hailed London's bid to host the 2017 World Athletics Championships
5 April 2012

Boris Johnson today hailed London's bid to host the 2017 World Athletics Championships as the capital waited to find out if it has been awarded the event.

London, competing against Doha, the Qatari capital, was set to learn which had won this afternoon.

The Mayor was in Monaco with Sports Minister Hugh Robertson, Sebastian Coe and UK Athletics chairman Ed Warner for last-ditch campaigning before the vote.

The last time a British team campaigned for a major event it ended in a humiliating defeat for England's 2018 World Cup bid.

Losing to Doha would reopen the debate about whether it is right to insist on keeping an athletics track at the Olympic stadium after the 2012 Games.

Mr Johnson said the capital was the "perfect place" to stage the event. Denise Lewis, the 2000 Olympic heptathlon champion, and Jodie Williams, 18, European and world junior sprint champion, were speaking at London's presentation.
