Mayoral candidates clash on cycling

Cycle clash: Boris Johnson cycles through Trafalgar Square
30 April 2012

The mayoral candidates clashed over cycling today at the final hustings before London goes to the polls.

Mayor Boris Johnson was attacked by Ken Livingstone and Lib-Dem Brian Paddick at the event over his record on cycling.

Mr Johnson said he accepted that London is "imperfect for cycling" but claimed that the proportion of cyclists being killed is falling.

Green candidate Jenny Jones and Independent Siobhan Benita also appeared on the platform at the Sustrans London Fit for Cycling debate.

Ms Jones attacked Mr Johnson's claims over the number of deaths and seriously injured cyclists, claiming he was using "spurious" figures.

Mr Johnson said he would use a second term in office to expand the cycle hire scheme and improve safety across the capital.

The Mayor said: "We will of course be expanding the cycle hire scheme. You will be seeing those hire bikes poised...to colonise further territories of the city."

He also said he would "continue our work of bringing down the number of KSIS (killed or seriously injured) on our streets.

"They have gone down in the last four years but patently there is more to do.

"I humbly accept the criticisms. The city as it is is imperfect for cycling."

Mr Livingstone and Mr Johnson again clashed over the Labour candidate's bid to cut transport fares by seven per cent.

He said he would use surpluses in TfL's budget to support cycle safety initiatives.

Mr Johnson said: "The cash that sits in TfL balances is allocated to important projects including cycling.

"If you cut that...you cut our ability to do things for cycling."

Lib-Dem Brian Paddick said he would "put pressure of the government to have compulsory motion sensors down the sides of long vehicles".

It comes as Mr Johnson was today caught on camera swearing at a BBC reporter.

The Mayor was filmed this morning referring to BBC reporter Tim Donovan and his "f***ing b*******" after being questioned over his relationship to Rupert Murdoch.

Today's hustings was organised by The Times and Sustrans.
