Motorbikes banned from bus lanes

Motorcyclists will not be allowed to use the capital's bus lanes, the Mayor said today.

He said a report by his own transport department about a trial scheme to let motorcyclists use two bus lanes was "flawed".

The study, leaked to the Standard in January, showed accidents halved on the routes in Brixton and Finchley as it became safer for cyclists, motorcyclists, car-users and pedestrians.

But today Mr Livingstone said the three-year study was based on "misleading statistics" and that it used "flawed analysis based on a single day's traffic counts".

Motorcyclists could still use the trial bus lanes but would not be allowed to use others. Craig Carey-Clinch, of the Motor Cycle Industry Federation, said the report contradicted the Mayor.
