Nearly half the electorate supports the Alternative Voting system, a poll out today suggests.

With three weeks to go until a referendum on changing the voting system, a YouGov poll for the Institute of Public Policy Research (IPPR) has found 45% of voters are in favour of AV.

The survey of 2,199 voters puts the "Yes" campaign 12 points ahead of the "No" vote. The poll found 17% still don't know whether they are in favour of AV, while 6% would not say.

Nick Pearce, director of the IPPR, said: "This poll appears to show that when people engage with AV and are given a chance to try out the system of voting preferences, their support for change grows."

A spokesman for the NO to AV campaign said: "The IPPR is a 'yes' supporting think-tank and we believe this poll should be treated with immense suspicion.

"From our research, we find that once people have the expensive, unfair and undemocratic Alternative Vote system explained, they choose to preserve (the) one person, one vote (system) and will vote no on 5 May."
