Half of Londoners want a new referendum on any Brexit deal struck by Theresa May before Britain leaves the European Union, a YouGov poll reveals today.
Some 49 per cent of people in the capital said they want the final say on the agreement due to be struck this autumn on rules for trade and co-operation.
Only 33 per cent support the Government’s wish for a “meaningful vote” in Parliament – which could turn out to be a “take it or leave it” vote for MPs, with the public having no voice.
The findings came as a group of Labour MPs challenged Jeremy Corbyn’s backing for refusal to support a second referendum.
Ten MPs called for the so-called “People’s Vote”. In an open letter they urged: “The issue now is what we think about the Brexit deal that the Prime Minister brings back. Will it secure a good future for our young people and allow them to thrive?”
Support for a fresh vote was over two-to-one among the under-50s, found the poll of 1,020 Londoners commissioned by Best for Britain, a pro-EU group.
Chief executive Eloise Todd said: “For London the risks of Brexit are huge: fashion, services, tech, finance, hospitality and the NHS are under pressure – it’s time to do what’s best for Britain and put ‘staying in’ on the table.”
