Jeremy Corbyn called for Boris Johnson to "consider his position" in an impassioned speech after today's Supreme Court ruling.

The opposition leader took to the lectern at the party conference in Brighton moments after Lady Hale delivered the bombshell ruling which said that the prorogation of Parliament was unlawful.

Addressing delegates, he said: "The Supreme Court has just announced its decision and it shows that the Prime Minister has acted wrongly in shutting down Parliament.

"It demonstrates a contempt for democracy and an abuse of power by him."

He added that he would be in touch with speaker John Bercow immediately to demand that Parliament is recalled.

He then added: "And I invite Boris Johnson in the historic words, to consider his position and become the shortest serving Prime Minister that's ever been."

The crowd immediately broke out into applause for the Labour leader, swiftly followed by the familiar song of "oh Jeremy Corbyn".

This quickly changed to a chant of "Johnson out", which was shouted on the floor after Mr Corbyn left the stage.

Mr Corbyn's deputy, Tom Watson, also said the Prime Minister should resign.

The Supreme Court decision came as Ms Long-Bailey gave a keynote speech in Brighton, where she was watched by Mr Corbyn and also shadow chancellor John McDonnell.
