London gets too much of UK’s wealth, claims Labour

London is getting too big a share of Britain’s prosperity, Ed Miliband’s growth guru said today.

Lord Adonis unveiled plans to boost the economies of smaller cities by giving them bigger powers similar to those enjoyed by City Hall. The peer, who is expected to run for London Mayor, said: “We are concerned abut the unbalanced nature of growth. We have got to see prosperity shared more widely.”

Mr Miliband embraced the blueprint in a speech in Leeds, where he warned of “vast” inequalities between regions and vowed to create “regional powerhouses”. He said: “Independent experts say four fifths of new private-sector jobs created since 2010 are in London.”

But Tories claimed the figure, from a Centre for Cities report, was based on data up to 2012, and more recent data showed the position had reversed.
