No more bucks for your bangers: Government rules out new ‘meat tax’ to tackle carbon emissions

Downing Street on Friday ruled out a new “meat tax” on sausages or other products in Britain.

A senior No10 official said: “This is categorically not going to happen.

“We will not be imposing a meat tax on the great British banger or anything else.”

Boris Johnson is seeking to get the UK to “netzero” by 2050 and Britain is hosting the COP26 climate change summit in Glasgow this year.

Whitehall officials have been told to come forward with proposals to slash carbon emissions to reach the goal.

Meat production is a major contributor to greenhouse gases.

But No10 made clear a “meat tax” would not be imposed in the UK.
