Theresa May dodged answering a question about how she was feeling following the disastrous General Election result in a TV interview and said she was: “Getting on with the job”.

In the bizarre exchange on Sky News, the Prime Minster was asked whether she was “shell-shocked” after losing her Commons majority in Thursday's vote.

But Mrs May shied away from discussing her emotions after a difficult few days, instead saying she was concentrating on preparing for Brexit negotiations.

She said: “What I’m feeling is actually there is a job to be done and I think what the public want is to ensure that the Government is getting on with that job.

“I’ve appointed Cabinet Ministers today, I’ll be meeting with my Cabinet tomorrow. On Tuesday I will be going to France for meetings with President Macron.

“These are important in getting on with our preparations for our Brexit negotiations but also dealing with the challenges that people see in their everyday lives.”

The Prime Minister was set to meet with furious backbench MPs today as pressure continues to mount on the Tory leader following the election.

Mrs May was eight seats short of making up a majority government and has entered into talks with Ireland's DUP.
