Theresa May has reportedly approached the Liberal Democrats for help in pushing legislation through Parliament.

The Prime Minister's new chief of staff Gavin Barwell spoke to senior Lib Dem figures in a bid to secure potentially crucial support from the party's MPs on mutual priorities, The Times reported.

The Conservatives and the Lib Dems broadly agree on some policies, such as mental health reforms.

Mr Barwell was said to have spoken to his opposite number, Tim Farron's chief of staff Ben Williams, and at least one high-profile Lib Dem MP in the hope of securing Parliamentary votes.

Departing leader Mr Farron has previously ruled out any Parliamentary pacts or coalitions, but that stance would not preclude discussions on supporting the Government on individual issues.

A Lib Dem source told the newspaper: "Gavin said that there were possibilities for joint working on areas of the Queen's Speech. He mentioned mental health. Where we agree I imagine we're open to discussion."

A Tory source said: "As we have been saying since the Queen's Speech, we are happy to work across the House to drive forward the changes our country needs."

The Lib Dems have 12 MPs - two more than the DUP, who have agreed to back the Conservatives in a confidence and supply arrangement.
