Watch: refugee children use google for the first time

Kate Moore11 December 2017

A new heart-warming video features refugee children in Chad going online for the first time.

The film coincides with the launch of the State of the World’s Children annual report, which this year focuses on children in a digital world.

Figures from Unicef reveal that every day, 176,000 children go online for the first time, enabling them to start carving their digital footprint.

Digital technology can massively benefit the world’s most disadvantaged children, including those growing up in poverty or affected by humanitarian emergencies.

Around one third of the world’s youth - 346 million - are not online, exacerbating inequities and reducing children’s ability to participate in an increasingly digital economy.

The report also examines how the internet can increase children’s vulnerability, including misuse of their private information, access to harmful content, and cyberbullying.

The charity is calling on governments and the digital technology sector to create policies to help children make the most of digital opportunities, while protecting them from harm.
