If you were hoping Serena Williams would shed some light onto Meghan Markle’s post-Royal Family plans, you’ll have to look elsewhere.

The tennis superstar was quick to shut down any questions surrounding the Duchess of Sussex during an interview on Monday morning following the first round of the Australian Open (Williams won her first match).

While speaking to the press following her win, one reporter switched the topic to Williams’ pal Meghan and her husband Harry.

“Your good friend, Meghan Markle, who attended your last two slams, and Harry, have taken a move, a stance that many people think is extraordinary and historic. What are your feelings about that? Have you spoken to her?” the reporter asked, referring to the couple's decision to step down as senior members of the Royal Family.

"Yeah, I have absolutely no comments on anything with that,” Williams is reported as having said, adding, “But good try. You tried. You did good.”

The tennis pro has been friends with Meghan since 2014, and over the years, she’s become part of the Duchess’ inner circle. Meghan has frequently been spotting cheering her friend on during tennis matches, and she was a guest at Meghan's royal wedding in 2018.

“We hit it off immediately, taking pictures, laughing and chatting - not about tennis or acting, but about good old-fashioned girly stuff,” Meghan wrote of Williams on her former lifestyle blog, The Tig. “So began our friendship...She quickly became a confidante I would text when I was traveling, the friend I would rally around for her tennis matches, and the down-to-earth chick I was able to grab lunch with a couple of weeks ago in Toronto."

Williams is equally as fond of Meghan, saying in a 2017 Vanity Fair profile of the Duchess-to-be, “Her personality just shines. I told her, ‘You’ve got to be who you are, Meghan. You can’t hide.”

While details regarding Meghan and Harry’s exit were being finalized in the UK, the Duchess and baby Archie have been staying in Canada. Meghan was recently spotted in Vancouver, quietly meeting with charitable organizations.
