There comes a time in the life of most iPhone and iPad users when the monthly hard drive cull becomes the norm – how many pictures to delete, how many apps to cut loose until enough space is freed up?

But the whole time, there are a bunch of apps that you can’t get rid of, even though you never use them. Stocks? Never looked at them. Compass? Not used it. Apple Watch? Why would you need it if you don’t have one?

These native apps come as part of the iOS software, taking up space that you could be using for the latest Angry Birds update.

However, Apple CEO Tim Cook has hinted that the native apps could soon have the option to be deleted by users. Speaking to Buzzfeed, he said: "I recognise that some people want to do this, and it's something we are looking at.

“We’ll figure out a way [for you to remove them]. … It’s not that we want to suck up your real estate; we’re not motivated to do that. We want you to be happy."

Cook explained that the iOS infrastructure means that deleting native apps could cause functionality issues in other areas of the iPhone – so it may not be a quick fix, but it’s an issue that Apple are aware of.

First the taco emoji, now this – it seems Apple really do want to make your dreams come true.
