Watch pack of Boston Dynamics robot dogs pulling full-sized lorry to show off strength

Robotics firm Boston Dynamics wanted to demonstrate the sheer strength of its SpotMini dogs

Whilst most of the tech world has been focused on Samsung’s new folding phone this week, experimental robotics firm Boston Dynamics was quietly uploading the latest video demonstrating the feat of its creations.

A total of 10 SpotMini dogs are seen in the video working together to pull a full-sized truck across the Boston Dynamics parking lot.

It’s an impressive feat of strength from the robots, which are 0.84 metres high and have a payload of about 14kg.

SpotMini regularly features in Boston Dyanmics’ videos. Last year, the robot made headlines following a video of it dancing to Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars. It’s able to do this thanks to its mobility features and perception sensors that help it with navigation and mobile manipulation.

SpotMini’s older sibling, Spot, has some impressive powers too. It can autonomously navigate around buildings and use cameras to map out the scenario. The idea is that this robot will be used on construction sites.

The truck-pulling video is about more than showing off SpotMini’s strength. Boston Dynamics says the robot is now off the production line and will be available “for a range of applications soon.” The company says it can handle objects, climb stairs and will operate in offices, homes and outdoors.

In terms of other specs, it is all-electric and can last for around 90 minutes on a charge, depending on what it is doing. Boston Dynamics also says this is the quietest robot it has ever built.

There’s no pricing yet for the robot, but it probably won’t be suitable for consumer use anyway.

Before SpotMini hits the market though, Pick will be out first. A robotic arm aimed at use in warehouses, the robot can pick up and move boxes with surprising ease and skill.
