Facebook is reportedly trialling a massive revamp of its feed aimed at challenging Google and Twitter as a source of news.

The social network is said have begun experimenting with a redesign that sees stories organised under topic sections.

Screengrabs shared by American users on whom the changes are apparently being tested show options including “World & US”, “Sports” and “Food” at the bottom of the news feed.

A Facebook spokesman told Mashable: "People have told us they’d like options to see more stories on Facebook around specific topics they’re interested in.

"So we have been testing a few feeds for people to view more and different stories from people and pages based on topic areas."

Tech giant rivals Twitter and Google have recently introduced new functionality aimed at improving how they deliver news to users.

The microblogging network unveiled Twitter Moments earlier this year, with Google rolling out so-called accelerated mobile pages which allow articles to load faster on smartphones.
