Fantasy iPhones - diehards designing their own

The release of the iPhone 4S raised more than a few eyebrows among even the most diehard of iFans for one reason alone - it fell short of the highly anticipated and still elusive "5".

Many disappointed users found their appetite for new innovation was left unsated by the few internal additions, including a dual-core A5 chip, a slightly better camera and the overly plugged "personal assistant" software, Siri.

It seems they will have to stay hungry until the next launch, when they may finally get the complete redesign they crave.

But the most hardened iFans are refusing to bide their time until the next launch and instead have taken to the platform in which they find most solace - the virtual one - launching their own designs for iPhone concepts that they believe could deliver what the 4S has not.

Springing up on various techie blogs and trend-hunting sites, many designs - complete with their own marketing campaigns - have caused more of a stir than the official model.

A dedicated site, iLounge.com, has initiated a competition for the best reinterpretation. And they're not short of applicants.

Coming in all shapes and sizes (and levels of seriousness), users have run amok with creative licence in a situation where actuality is merely an afterthought.

Ranging from the slick and credible transparent "heir apparent", to a transforming phone that builds like Lego, and an entirely handset-free iPhone, nil, which is just a collection of apps in your pocket, the weird and wonderful world of fantasy iPhones weaves a fairytale of minimalism, modification and functionality.

Will Apple be open to suggestions?
