Google says it was hit by a phishing email that could have targeted around one million of its users.

Scammers pretending to be from Google Docs emailed a fake link to a host of Gmail accounts on Wednesday.

If the link was clicked on, additional copies of the email were sent to all their address book contacts.

There were fears the scammers were harvesting personal information and trying to get Google login credentials

But Google said that, while the campaign accessed and used contact information, no other data was apparently exposed.

It said fewer than 0.1 per cent of customers were affected, equating to around one million users.

In a statement posted online, the web giant said: “We have taken action to protect users against an email impersonating Google Docs and have disabled offending accounts.

“We’ve removed the fake pages, pushed updates through Safe Browsing, and our abuse team is working to prevent this kind of spoofing from happening again.

“We encourage users to report phishing emails in Gmail.”
