Microsoft has unveiled a new version of the Xbox One at this year’s edition of video game trade fair Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).

The new console was initially announced at last year’s E3, previously called Project Scorpio, and promised “true 4K gaming”.

Now called the Xbox One X, the system is a more a powerful version of its predecessor, with Microsoft delivering on the promised ability to run games in 4K ultra-HD.

Speaking at the fair Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, explained that the new device contains the fastest processor chip ever used in a games console, calling it “the most powerful console ever made”.

Intended to rival Playstation’s PS4 Pro, which also has 4K capabilities, the Xbox One X boasts more RAM than the Sony console and improved graphics processing.

But despite all that extra oomph, the new Xbox is the smallest yet.

There are apparently concerns that all that power packed into a slimmed-down device could increase the risk of overheating, as the console comes complete with a ‘vapor chamber’ to help regulate temperature.

Popular games like Minecraft and Forza Motorsport 7 have been given a 4K makeover for use with the new gaming system.

However, despite the new console supporting virtual reality gaming, Xbox’s new line-up didn’t include any VR games, suggesting that Microsoft still views VR as not yet having enough mass-market interest.

The Xbox One X will be released on November 7 and will cost £499.
