Game plan: Netflix's Stranger Things is getting its own video game

Netflix makes a play for games

TV just became more immersive. Netflix is branching into games — and that means Stranger Things the video game is on the way to play for the channel’s nearly 140 million subscribers.

Turning the original titles into games is a clever way to monetise what is an extremely popular product. Indeed, several films and TV shows have done it successfully over the years.

Most gamers have played Goldeneye on a Nintendo 64 at some point but with millions of fans, Stranger Things could be the perfect title to launch its new idea. The thought of playing as Eleven will excite many — and open up the market to new gamers.

Netflix is going to gaming fair E3 and will have a panel with the working title Bringing Your Favourite Shows to Life: Developing Netflix Originals into Video Games.

The move indicates Netflix is ahead of the curve in every respect and refuses to stand on the mountain of its own success, instead aiming for the next summit.

How long it will take to release the game is anyone’s guess but the fact it’s at E3 this year suggests that it can’t be too far away.

Sony and Microsoft may need to take note of what damage a third rival could do to their hold on gaming.

It’s game on.
