Snapchat users across the globe reported issues leaving them unable to use the app for hours.

Fears the app had gone down in Europe and the US prompted fans to take to other forms of social media in a panic.

Many questioned why they were unable to reply to snaps while others reported being logged out of their accounts from 4pm on Monday.

It was unclear by 8pm what had caused the problem but the photo and video sharing app’s support Twitter account said Snapchat was “looking into it”.

Website DownDetector listed thousands of reports of the app not working with 56 per cent of people claiming they couldn’t send or receive snaps.

Some users joked about the issues on Twitter and shared amusing memes.

One person wrote: “I’ve been sending people abuse on snapchat for not replying to me only to discover it’s down. Oops?”

Another added: “Time to start my teen post-apocalyptic novel about the day Snapchat went down.”
