Stormzy is to perform at the first ever 5G-powered gig in London to mark the launch of the new high-speed network in the UK.

This week, EE revealed it is going to be the first network to flick the switch on its 5G technologies on May 30. And, to celebrate the launch, Stormzy is performing a 5G-powered gig at a secret location in London on Wednesday, May 29.

EE is keeping details about the show under wraps, but they are promising a spectacular audio and visual show. Expect hits from his 2017 album, Gang Signs & Prayer, as well as his new track, Vossi Bop, which recently spent two weeks at number one.

Though tickets are free for the event you need to enter into a public ballot in order to catch a chance of seeing the Glastonbury 2019 headliner, at EE.co.uk/Stormzy.

What is 5G?

The new mobile technology uses higher frequencies than the likes of 4G, offering more speed and higher bandwidth.

The main benefits to customers will be reliability and speed in busy areas so thousands of devices can be connected at the same time without it affecting internet access.

If you’re successful, EE will reveal further details, including the location, shortly before the event.

For those who aren’t able to grab tickets, EE will be live-streaming the event using, you guessed it, 5G. The company will also be presenting the gig as a 360-degree virtual reality experience for fans to get a front-row view in select EE stores in its other 5G launch cities: Birmingham, Cardiff, Manchester and Edinburgh.

5G is about to change everything you know about the internet. Speaking at the EE 5G launch in London this week, Marc Allera, CEO of BT consumer brands including EE, said: “4G marked a huge shift in the creation of businesses we all use - Uber, Deliveroo, Netflix, YouTube and Instagram. 5G is going to change everything all over again.”

At the moment, customers can achieve connectivity speeds on 4G at around 30 megabytes per second (Mbps) on average. With 5G, customers can expect an uplift of at least 150Mbps, and often it will be more than that.

At St Paul's in central London, EE managed to achieve speeds in excess of 500Mbps. This is extremely fast and will be much better than even the Wi-Fi router in your home.

EE will also be showcasing its 5G technology at other events across the UK this summer, including powering the mobile network at Glastonbury.
