The Chancellor’s failure to mention Crossrail 2 in his Budget has increased fears that ministers are going cold on the plans.

City Hall aides revealed they are concerned that the Government has poli- tical and funding issues over the flag- ship £32 billion north-south rail-link.

MPs have already expressed fears that Theresa May could put the brakes on the major infrastructure project to avoid accusations that the Government is favouring the capital over cities such as Manchester and Leeds.

Mayor Sadiq Khan told the Standard: “I’m disappointed that the Government did not use this opportunity to pledge their support for Crossrail 2.”

Liberal Democrat Assembly member Caroline Pidgeon said: “I fear that the project is being marginalised. Slippage in its delivery is now a real risk, in part because of the misleading perception that it will only serve London.

“The reality is that Crossrail 2 will benefit people from Hampshire to East Anglia. This is a project that is vital for the long-term success of London, the South-East and the whole country.”

Sources said transport minister Lord Ahmad told a private meeting of MPs yesterday that he was “confident” Crossrail 2 would go ahead.
