Crossrail chairman reveals scale of Crossrail work at Tottenham Court Road

Ramzy Alwakeel12 August 2015

The chairman of the Crossrail project has revealed the scale of the work being done to ready Tottenham Court Road for the capital's new high-speed rail link.

Cavernous tunnels 11m wide and 250m-long platforms are shown in this video, shot during work in the West End station ahead of Crossrail's 2018 opening and released by Sir Terry Morgan.

The station's Central line concourse is shut all this year while the huge new platforms and tracks are built.

Crossrail will link north-east London and Essex with Heathrow, extending west to Reading. The massive trains will carry 1,500 passengers each - nearly double the capacity of a Tube train.

Tottenham Court Road's Crossrail platform is one of nine new stations being built across London in preparation for the arrival of the service.

Designs for the trains have been kept largely under wraps, though they are being built by Bombardier - the same firm delivering the new London Overground trains, also set to hit tracks in 2018. They are expected to be showcased later this year.
