Passengers travelling through Gatwick have faced knock-on delays after a "hole" in the runaway caused chaos at the airport yesterday.

The main runway was shut for about an hour yesterday afternoon, while planes used the spare northern runway instead.

Several flights were diverted to Bournemouth, Luton or Stansted, while others were delayed while investigations were carried out on the tarmac.

The runway is now operating as normal, but knock-on delays have meant dozens of flights have been postponed or cancelled today.

Passengers planning to fly through Gatwick have been advised to contact their airline to check whether flights are running to schedule.

Travellers have also reported long queues to pass through security.

Passenger Simon Ross said: "Another standard morning of long queues and disgruntled check in staff."

While another tweeted the airport asking: "Hi - I'm currently stuck at the passport check in a massive queue! Any help/tips appreciated."

A Gatwick Airport spokesperson said: "Following the closure of our runway yesterday, there may be some knock-on delays and cancellations to flights this morning.

"Please contact your airline for the latest information about your flight. We'd like to apologise to passengers for disruption they've experienced."
