Almost every station on the Tube network now offers ultra-fast wi-fi after 100 more stations were today plugged into the underground network.
Transport for London (TfL) and Virgin Media have finished installing high-speed internet at the latest tranche of stations, bringing the total connected since 2012 to 250 of the 270 on the network.
Around half a million phones, tablets and laptops connect every day on the network downloading some 20 terabytes of data - a seven-fold increase on 2014.
Gregor McNeil, of Virgin Media, said: “Since we launched the LU WiFi service three years ago we have been astounded by the take-up and reaction from Tube users and reaching the 250 station milestone has been a long-term ambition for us.
“By bringing connectivity to more people where and when they need it, out of their homes, we are helping Londoners to stay connected and for them to do all the stuff they love - post, tweet, watch and share - whilst on the move.”
The service, which can reach speeds of up to 100MB, provides free travel information to anyone who connects through Virgin Media’s wif-fi portal, including live service updates and TfL’s Journey Planner.
Customers of Virgin Media, EE, Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone, O2 and Three can also access the wider internet with no extra charge, and there is a pay-as-you go service for other users.
