Red-letter day for the Boris bus as it masters a complete route

Matthew Beard21 June 2013

The first route in London to operate entirely with the new Boris bus will begin tomorrow.

Route 24 runs between Hampstead Heath and Pimlico.

During peak hours 27 of the new buses, out of an order of 600, will be in service to carry the 28,000 passengers who travel on the route each day. Operated by Metroline, the route runs via Victoria, Westminster, Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, Warren Street, Mornington Crescent and Camden.

The buses cost £354,000 each and need “conductors” on the rear platform at an estimated annual cost of £60,000 each. The vehicles are manufactured by the family-owned Wrightbus company in Northern Ireland. Mayor Boris Johnson described it as “a brilliant feat of British engineering”.

Tests show the New Bus for London is the greenest diesel electric hybrid bus in the world.

Route 11, operated by Go Ahead, converts to New Buses on September 21. It runs from Liverpool Street Station to Fulham Broadway.
