Tube stations blooming in 150th year of the Tube

Rayners Lane in bloom
9 January 2014

Tube staff have used the 150th anniversary of London Underground as inspiration for their entries to the annual Underground in Bloom competition.

Some have grown a bed of flowers in the shape of the number 150, or cultivated Victorian-era blooms. Others have been racing to grow the most fragrant honeysuckle at Leyton, the loveliest lilies at Rayners Lane and the tastiest spinach at Hampstead.

All this green-fingered work is done by Tube staff in their own time. It has transformed platforms, station entrances and ticket halls into colourful places for customers to enjoy.

A team of judges has been assessing the entries, which have come in from 68 stations, depots and train crew sites. Judges will choose winners based on overall impact, imagination and creativity.

To mark the 150 anniversary of the Tube, extra points will also be given this year for the interpretation of the Tube150 theme and for 'greener' gardens.

The awards ceremony takes place on 11 September at City Hall.
