ACPO urges terror policing shake-up

12 April 2012

Britain's chief police officers are proposing a radical shake-up of the counter terrorism policing structure.

Under the plans, regional counter terrorism units and intelligence cells could be set up in "key locations" across the country.

There is also likely to be an increase in resources dedicated to surveillance and intelligence gathering on terror suspects.

The Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) has spent the past year considering a number of proposals to revamp Britain's counter terrorism policing structure to meet the "unprecedented" nature of the current threat.

They will be considered by its Terrorism and Allied Matters (TAM) committee and the Home Office and consulted on next month.

Acpo president Ken Jones said: "These developing proposals present a radical step-change in the way we police terrorism.

"The change in the threat over the past few years has brought with it a change in intention and tactics.

"Perpetrators are now clearly prepared to sacrifice their own lives as well as causing mass fatalities.

"It is this change that has caused us to rethink our policing style and the proposals drawn up by ACPO TAM represent a huge revision of the infrastructure, processes and protocols required to effectively counter the threat."

Acpo's TAM committee is responsible for setting the strategic direction of Britain's counter-terrorism activity.
