A law firm has apologised after it was slammed for a "disgraceful" tweet promoting its services just hours after a rollercoaster crash at Alton Towers.

Broad Yorkshire Law tweeted that its employees were "experts in personal injury" as emergency services were mounting a rescue effort after two carriages on the Smiler ride collided this afternoon.

A total of 16 people were involved in the crash at around 2pm, with two male and two female teenagers suffering serious leg injuries.

It posted: "Been injured in a roller coaster crash?! We're experts in Personal Injury!! #Smiler #AltonTowers"

Tweet: the post was deleted within an hour

Within 45 minutes the firm had apologised, but that failed to stop users piling in with criticism.

One branded them "vultures" while others wrote the incident was "absolutely disgraceful" and "disgusting".

Broad Yorkshire Law describes itself as a "virtual law firm" with "no walls or boundaries" meaning clients can seek legal help out of hours and without visiting an office.

On its website, the Sheffield-based firm writes: "Are we the right firm for you? We are happy to speak for FREE! So why not call us or email us now for a no obligation initial discussion."

Alton Towers is to remain closed tomorrow while an investigation into the incident continues.

Nick Varney, chief executive of Merlin Entertainments, which runs the park, said: "This has been a terrible incident and a devastating day for everyone here.

"I would like to express my sincerest regret and apology to everyone who suffered injury and distress today and to their families.

"The safety of our visitors is our primary concern. The park will remain closed until we understand better the cause of this dreadful incident.
