Andy Murray today refused to say if he was about to propose to his long-term girlfriend after his historic Wimbledon victory.

The newly-crowned Champion batted away questions over his romantic future with 25-year-old Kim Sears, and shot down ITV’s This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby by saying: “I only met you like ten minutes ago so I wouldn’t be telling you first.”

The 26-year-old has been dating Ms Sears for the last seven years. He said he is not planning to get on one knee - but added “you never know”.

The pair have been living together in Surrey since 2010. Ms Sears, an artist, travels with him to major tournaments but is nevertheless forced to spend a lot of time apart from him while he travels the world.

Murray today told of her importance in his life and career.

He said: “It has been getting close to eight years that we have been together.

“She has been with me since the second time I played Wimbledon, just after the first summer I played.

“It has been good because her dad is a tennis coach and he still travels on the tour. She understands the sport well and is used to being away from her dad from a young age. She understands that sort of distant relationship, and yes it works well.”

Murray spent the day carrying out a string of press interviews and photoshoots after becoming the first British man since Fred Perry in 1936 to win the Wimbledon singles title.

It has prompted growing speculation that as well as getting married, Murray could be in line to receive a knighthood.

A clearly fatigued Murray answered numerous questions about his momentous achievement with good grace.

But one interview on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme this morning almost left him lost for words.

In a surreal exchange, award-winning presenter John Humphrys asked Murray whether he preferred fluffy or smooth tennis balls.

He also asked the star if he would rather be Prime Minister or the winner of Wimbledon.

Murray replied: “Err, I don’t know a lot about politics.”
