Supermarket chain Asda has said its stores are operating as normal after a technical glitch caused chaos yesterday.

Customers complained they faced "complete chaos" as the glitch hit the majority of the company's 626 UK stores.

It meant that checkout staff were forced to use old-fashioned card readers or only take cash due to the malfunction, while Sunday shoppers joined queues for up to an hour.

The company has since apologised and tweeted last night that the majority of its stores were now operating as normal.

Photos posted on social media showed crowds of angry customers and trolleys ditched in aisles because of the marathon waits.

One Dagenham shopper said he had to leave £250 worth of shopping behind because he had no cash on him.

And angry shopper Jim Bentley tweeted: "No backup, no redundancy system.

“We're just stood here like cattle waiting for your systems to start working again. On Sunday."

He added: “Now I'm stood here like a muppet waiting for tills to open while my 3 yr old is going mental. Not good. Store staff being really good.”

Emily Tyler wrote: “Longest food shop ever thanks to no apology for having to wait in a queue for over an hour.”

A spokeswoman for Asda said their stores were fully up and running again this morning.
