In recent months, people expecting benefits or DWP payments have experienced delays in receiving their money due to bank holidays.

Knowing when you’ll receive payments and how much you can expect is important for household budgeting, and this month is set to be no different.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is changing the date in August when thousands of benefit claimants will receive their money.

The summer bank holiday means that people in receipt of Universal Credit, Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Employment Support Allowance (ESA), State Pension, and six other payments willreceive it on a different day. It is one of several DWP money and other financial changes coming next month.

Many households are sure to be wondering when they can expect to receive money, and how much they will get.

Find out below the benefit payment dates for August.

Benefit payments in August 2023

The bank holiday is on Monday, August 28, and anyone expecting a payment on this date will instead have it paid into their bank account on the previous working day — Friday, August 25.

This could affect the following DWP payments:

  • Universal Credit
  • State pension
  • Pension Credit
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Personal Independence Payment
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance
  • Employment Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance

Changes to PIP for August 2023

The DWP has said a “new approach to part of the PIP process” will start from this month. This relates to claimants with “high levels of functional impairment” and no likelihood of improvements to their condition, who get an ongoing award of PIP that has no end date.

Normally, these claimants only have their condition reviewed every 10 years, a date that is due this year for those who began claiming PIP when it started in 2013, when it replaced Disability Living Allowance.

But now these claimants will be given new shorter PIP renewal forms for more regular assessment. In addition, a face-to-face health assessment will not be required unless a person’s medical condition has changed.

Other DWP changes for August

This month will also see more changes as increasing numbers of households claiming older legacy benefits will be moved to Universal Credit throughout August. Universal Credit is replacing the following six benefits:

  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income Support
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Housing Benefit

The DWP wants the majority of people moved over by December 2024. However, if you claim income-related ESA and do not get Tax Credits, your deadline to be transferred is 2028.

When it is your turn to switch benefits, you will receive a “migration notice” in the post and given a three-month deadline to start claiming Universal Credit.
