BBC weather Twitter hacked by Syrian activists

Hacked: The errant posts on the BBC's weather Twitter

One of the BBC’s official Twitter feeds was hacked today by Syrian cyber activists.

A group calling itself the Syrian Electronic Army hacked into the BBC’s weather feed, posting pro-Assad messages. The breach occurred at lunchtime, with the hackers posting a number of messages including “long live Syria Al-Assad”.

Other posts read: “Hazardous fog warning for North Syria: Erdogan orders terrorists to launch chemical weapons at civilian areas,” and “Scandal: Edinburgh storm warning station decommissioned after maintenance fund diverted to arming Syrian opposition.”

Another said: “Saudi weather station down due to head on-collision with camel.” After an hour, the group signed off saying: “Thank for hanging out with us.”

A spokeswoman for the BBC confirmed the account had been hacked. Previously the group has hacked the Agence France-Presse Twitter account and the website of Al Jazeera.
